Cutting Back on Disposable Vapes

Cutting Back on Disposable Vapes

With the recent trend of disposable vapes, there have been vapers also asking the question of how they can be cutting back on disposable vapes.

In this blog, we outline the two main issues with disposable vapes which are the: environmental impact and inability to customise how much nicotine you are vaping. At the end of the blog, we will lay out the two alternatives to disposables you can consider which are reusable vapes and nic salts.

Environmental Impact of Disposable Vapes

The popularity of disposable vapes has been increasing over the past year, however it does carry some consequences and a big one is the environmental impact. Skynews has reported that millions of disposable vapes have been discarded in landfills each year; and in the UK there are at least two disposable vapes being thrown out every second! Plastic can take up to a thousand years to decompose, the waste from disposable vapes will continue to pollute the planet for generations to come.

Another sticky thing about disposable vapes is their battery, their battery contains a tenth of a gramme of lithium metal. However, approximately 10 tonnes of lithium are being sent to general waste landfills annually which is enough metal to make batteries for 1200 electric cars

Market research done by a non-profit recycling organisation, Opinium for Material Focus, discovered that 18% of 4000 people surveyed had purchased a vape in the past year.

7% stated that they had bought a disposable vape which suggests around 168 million disposable vapes are purchased annually in the UK. The worrying statistic is that over half of users had reported discarding disposable vapes in general waste bins when finished instead of recycling them in waste electrical bins.

Making the switch from disposable vapes to reusable vapes will drastically reduce how much plastic and lithium you discard, because on average, reusable vape devices will last two years before they need to be replaced. Therefore, the difference between throwing out a reusable vape device every other year is minimal compared to the 52 to 365 disposable vapes discarded per year.

Disposable Vapes and Their Nicotine Content

Another proven issue with disposable vapes is the ability to control your nicotine intake with these devices. Most disposable vapes you will find on the market will contain at least 2% (20mg) nicotine in the pre-filled e-liquid, which is efficient for a former long-term smoker. However, this can be a bit too strong for a social smoker.

The nicotine content in these 600 puff disposable vapes are measured up to the nicotine content of 20 cigarettes which again proves to be strong for users that are not used to high nicotine content. You can get nicotine-free disposable vapes however, making that big jump from 20mg of nicotine to no nicotine content can be tricky.

Alternatives to Disposable Vapes

So the cutting back on disposable vapes are justified because of two main big issues with disposable vapes which are mentioned above: the environmental consequences and the inability of customising how much nicotine you are vaping. So you may be wondering, if not disposables then what? Alternatively, there a few options to take into consideration:

Reusable Vapes

As mentioned above, making that transition to reusable vapes will drastically reduce how much plastic and lithium you are discarding as it only needs to be replaced every other year. You also have plenty of device options based on your vaping style such as: pre-filled pod kits, refillable pod kits, vape kits.

The great thing about reusable vapes is that they are customisable as you can adjust the airflow, switch between e-liquid flavours. Another added benefit is that it is more cost effective, although it is expensive upfront (£20-£30 usually), it does not compare to the long-term expenses of purchasing a disposable vape frequently.

Nic Salts

With the release of disposable vapes, a number of vape brands have released e-liquid flavours in the form nic salts to replicate the flavour you would get in disposable vape flavours. Nic salts are used in disposables, therefore it would still give you that same nicotine hit.

These salts are available in different nicotine strengths, giving you the full reign of how much nicotine would like to vape.

Nic salts are usually sold in the following nicotine strengths:  5mg, 10mg, 20mg; which is convenient for vapers wanting to cut down on nicotine as they can gradually go down a notch with each time they purchase a nic salt bottle. Just like reusable vapes, nic salts are more cost effective than disposable vapes as they cost £3 per 10ml bottle on average.
